Kemi Oyewole, Spelman College, Year Abroad

The exposure to different perspectives was more than I could have ever imagined in another developed, English speaking country. The progressive students and faculty at SOAS challenged assumptions I have developed from my experience.

Study Abroad September - December 2012

Which courses did you study at SOAS?

Why did you choose SOAS?

I chose SOAS because I felt it would offer me the chance to take classes in my area of interest alongside students with as much passion for the subject matter. In addition, the course offerings allowed me to explore issues I might not in a more general curriculum.

How would you describe living in London?

Living in London was everything and nothing like I could have imagined. Having so many musical, artistic, political, and academic stages at my fingertips meant there were always four or five events vying for my free time. Any description I can give wouldn’t do the city justice, come and live the experience yourself!

How did you spend your free time?

Outside of my courses I spent time: worshipping with my church in London, exploring with my friends around the city, volunteering as a tutor for GCSE students, playing with the tennis society, and trying the array of ethnic food London has to offer.
