Water for Africa Research Project
Despite a significant international focus on the delivery of infrastructure and services, millions of poor people still struggle to access adequate water. The Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets for water are unlikely to be met in much of Africa; the devastating effects of poor water access impact upon food security, health, education, wellbeing and the environment.
The project seeks to contributed to achieving the MDG’s in water by generating knowledge about ‘problem areas’ for water governance, where increased capacity and better targeting would have greatest impact on poor people. These goals have been furthered through a programme of work addressing three broad questions:
- How can existing systems of water governance be better understood? (Conceptual work).
- What is the impact of different governance arrangements/modes of service delivery on poor people? (Empirical work).
- How can the benefits for poor people of water and development interventions be increased? (Influencing policy and practice).
The Water for Africa Research Project engages in activities to:
- Generate knowledge about whether existing approaches to water service delivery are reaching poor people.
- Build capacity of African and European water professionals and develop joint work with African institutions.
- Build networks and partnerships by undertaking joint research projects with academic and NGO partners and developing proposals for more in response to expressed needs of practitioners.
