Images Sizes Used in the CMS
There are two main types of image used in the CMS, Standard Image and Non-Standard Image. They are only available to CMS users who have access to the W_Images community.
General Information
- Images for the web should always be saved at 72 pixels per inch
- Images that contain blocks of colours (eg logos) should be saved as PNG files
- Images that are more complicated (eg photographs) should be saved as JPEG files
Standard Images

| * System Title: | Required. This is only used in the CMS, it should be descriptive of the image, mention your department and should have the image sizes included too (eg View of the Main SOAS Building - COM IMG - 485,186,56) |
| * Image Alt Text: | Required. This is very important for accessibility, it should describe what the image is. It is shown in some browsers when you hover the mouse over an image, it is also read to the visually impaired if they are using a web reader |
| In Page Caption: | If you choose to insert the image with a caption then this is the text that will be shown below the image. |
| * Image Original | Required. This is an image field, images in this field must be 186px wide. If you are uploading a staff or student image for a staff page then this must be 186x215 px. This image is most commonly used in staff, news and event pages. |
| Large | This is an image field where the image uploaded must be either 485px wide (generally for landscape images) or 240px wide (generally for portrait images) |
| Mini | This is an image field for thumbnail images, these must be 56x56px. These thumbnails are used in news and event listing pages. |
| Full | This is an image field which is mainly used for images in image galleries. The image can be any size but generally they shouldn't exceed 900px wide or 600px high. It is also used for the cut out images of students on student profile pages where the image should be a maximum of 165px wide and 169px high. |
