What is Welcome Week?
Welcome Week is a period of time at the beginning of the academic year at SOAS during which a variety of events are held to welcome our new students. During this period, you will participate in a wide range of social activities, including language events, walking tours and open-air markets. As well as providing a chance to learn about SOAS, Welcome Week allows you to become familiar with the representatives of our Faculty Offices, our Student Union and to get to know London.
We offer a number of organised social gatherings to help you make new friends and to get to know your course colleagues. Because of the intensity of activities, it is easier to make new friendships, some lasting for the whole university career or even longer!
This year Welcome Week begins on Monday 22 September and finishes on Friday 26 September. Don't forget that you need to enrol on your degree during this week!
What happens during Welcome Week
This is an important week for new students and you will have the opportunity to meet your fellow students, academic and administrative staff and to participate in a range of events to support you in your transition into life at SOAS, such as:
- Faculty and Department talks and welcome meetings
- Walking tours of SOAS and the local area
- Practical talks on study tips, how to manage your money, etc
- Language Taster classes where you can sample Khmer, Burmese, Hausa and more!
- Social Activities and the Students' Union Freshers' Fayre
Please note that we are in the process of finalising the arrangements for the various events during the week and these pages will be updated in July to provide more specific information.
It is essential that you attend your allocated enrolment session and the events arranged during Welcome Week. By joining in as many activities as possible, you can make new friends, familiarise yourself with the School, start making the most of your university experience and, of course, have fun!
You will receive various emails from the Registry and your Faculty with information about Welcome Week and the start of your degree studies at SOAS. You can expect to start receiving this information from August onwards.
Once you have accepted your offer of a place, you will receive an email from the Welcome Week Team with your login details (no earlier than August). This information will be sent to your personal email account to enable you to start your online registration, so please ensure you monitor your account regularly. Online registration must be completed prior to your arrival at SOAS.
All subsequent communications will be sent to your SOAS email account. You can also expect to receive communications from your Faculty, Department and from Student Mentors.
