Essential Documentation

Please ensure that you bring the following documents to your enrolment appointment.  Unfortunately, we will not be able to finalise your enrolment without them.  We need to see the original document and to retain a copy.  If you are able to bring a copy with your original documents, it will save you time on the day as there are only a limited number of photocopiers available for use in the Enrolment Hall.

Proof of Identity

We are required to check the identity of our students as part of the enrolment process.  SOAS’s preferred form of identification is a valid passport.  The following types of documentation will be acceptable identification for students who are not visa nationals:

  • Valid Passport;
  • UK photo driving licence;
  • European National Identity Card.
Visa and passport

The presentation of a valid passport and visa is a mandatory requirement for all non-EEA students (visa nationals).  You must provide us with the original documents and you should also bring a photocopy to avoid having to queue for the use of a photocopier in the enrolment hall.

Please see additional information about your required documentation and details of the International Students Day under the International Students section.

Your visa should be valid for the duration of your course - applications to renew or extend a visa can be made 3 months before the course year.

If you require a Tier-4 Student Visa, we would strongly recommend that you apply to us for a Confirmation of Acceptance for Study (CAS) as soon as possible (from July 2013).   Your Tier-4 Student Visa must have been issued with a CAS supplied by SOAS – we are unable to accept a Visa issues under sponsorship of another institution.  Your request for a CAS should be made by email to researchadmissions@soas.ac.uk

If you hold a different type of visa, which will expire before the end of the course, you must ensure that you apply for a new visa before this expires.

Please note that if you have to send your passport to the UK Border Agency in relation to a visa application, you must retain a copy of your visa and the photo page of the passport before you send it off.  To enable your enrolment to be completed, we will need to see a copy of your passport, copy of your visa application and proof of postage.

Evidence of Fees Payment or Sponsorship

You should pay your fees or provide your loan or sponsorship details to SOAS prior to arriving.  However, we also ask that you bring evidence of this with you to the enrolment hall, to enable us to confirm this information if this is required.

Late Enrolments

Students who are unable to attend Welcome Week can carry out their enrolment in the following week at Vernon Square.  This will take place in room V101, Monday – Friday (10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm).  You will be expected to provide all of your essential documents when you arrive and you must sign a declaration form accepting the risk and the responsibility for catching up on missed work.

Between Monday 7 October and Friday 11 October, late enrolment will only be permitted subject to prior academic approval from the Associate Dean.  You must obtain this written permission from your Faculty Office.  Once you have this written permission, you should email us at registrar@soas.ac.uk to let us know that you will be attending the Registry Office (Monday to Friday, 10am-4pm) with the permission.  You must ensure that you can provide all of your essential documents and will have to sign a declaration form accepting the risk and the responsibility for catching up on missed work.

Late enrolment is not permitted under any circumstances from 14 October 2013.  Students who are unable to enrol before this deadline will have to defer to 2014 entry.
