Information for Students

Re-enrolment

Index

Where and when do I attend my re-enrolment session?

Re-enrolment takes place during Welcome Week in room 116 at Russell Square. A map of the SOAS campus can be downloaded from this page.
The information of your allocated re-enrolment session will be emailed to your SOAS account closer to Welcome Week.

If you find that you are unable to attend the allocated session, there will be an Open Enrolment session on Friday 26 September between 11.00am and 4.00pm. You may have a slightly longer wait to complete the process depending on the numbers of students enrolling during the session.

Essential Documentation

Please ensure that you bring the following documents to your re-enrolment appointment. Unfortunately, we will not be able to finalise your re-enrolment without them. We need to see the original document and to retain a copy. If you are able to bring a copy with your original documents, it will save you time on the day as there are only a limited number of photocopiers and scanners available for use in the Enrolment Hall.

Proof of Identity

We are required to check the identity of our students as part of the enrolment process. SOAS’s preferred form of identification is a valid passport. The following types of documentation will be acceptable identification for students who are not visa nationals:

  • Valid Passport;
  • UK photo driving licence;
  • European National Identity Card.
Visa and passport

The presentation of a valid passport and visa is a mandatory requirement for all non-EEA students (visa nationals). You must provide us with the original documents and you should also bring a photocopy to avoid having to queue for the use of a photocopier in the enrolment hall.

Your visa should be valid for the duration of your course. Applications to renew or extend a visa can be made 3 months before the course year.

If you require a Tier-4 Student Visa, we would strongly recommend that you apply to us for a Confirmation of Acceptance for Study (CAS) as soon as possible (from July 2014). Your Tier-4 Student Visa must have been issued with a CAS supplied by SOAS – we are unable to accept a Visa issued under sponsorship of another institution. Your request for a CAS should be made by completing and submitting the PGR - CAS Application DOC (msword; 59kb) to pgresearch@soas.ac.uk.

If you hold a different type of visa, which will expire before the end of the course, you must ensure that you apply for a new visa before this expires.

Please note that if you have to send your passport to the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) in relation to a visa application, you must retain a copy of your visa and the photo page of the passport before you send it off. To enable your re-enrolment to be completed, we will need to see a copy of your passport, copy of your visa application and proof of postage.

Evidence of Fees Payment or Sponsorship

You should pay your fees or provide your loan or sponsorship details to SOAS prior to arriving. However, we also ask that you bring evidence of this with you to the enrolment hall, to enable us to confirm this information if this is required.

Late Enrolment

Students who are unable to attend Welcome Week can carry out their re-enrolment in the following week at 53 Gordon Square. This will take place in the Doctoral School Section, Registry from Monday to Friday, 10am-4pm. You will be expected to provide all of your essential documents when you arrive and you must sign a declaration form accepting the risk and the responsibility for catching up on missed work.

Between Monday 6 October and Friday 10 October 2014, late enrolment will only be permitted subject to prior academic approval from the Associate Dean. You must obtain this written permission from your Faculty Office. Once you have this written permission, you should email us at pgresearch@soas.ac.uk to let us know that you will be attending the Doctoral School Section with the permission. You must ensure that you can provide all of your essential documents and will have to sign a declaration form accepting the risk and the responsibility for catching up on missed work.

Late enrolment is not permitted under any circumstances from 13 October 2014. Students who are unable to enrol before this deadline will have to defer to 2015 entry.
