Peace Campaigning Workshop

Saturday 25th April (10:00am - 6:00pm) in the Djam Lecture Theatre

Registration (Saturday)

This workshop is the first part of the two-day African Women Front and Centre conference, a satellite event of the SOAS Festival of Ideas, facilitated by Hailey Chalhoub, Ilham Elazri, Vivienne Hayes and Stephanie Guirand.

This one-day workshop will demonstrate the process of using storytelling as an anchor to political organising. The sessions will include the administrative elements of preparing a political campaign, how to chair, and asset mapping (a list of community-based resources to be used for community organising efforts). By the end of the day, we would like each of the organisations represented to have an agenda for their next meeting, a framework and timeline for their current campaign, and an asset map. Lastly, there will be an introduction to Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) by Vivienne Hayes of the Women’s Resource Centre (WRC), which will continue in two parts at the conference.

You are eligible for participation in this workshop if you identify as an African woman and are member or representative of an organisation, charity, community group or association that works on the interests of African women. We will be sending a google form for all who register to ask questions about the campaigns and structure of their organisation in order to help inform the specifics of the interactive workshop.

Refreshments will be provided, and we kindly ask for a donation for the lunch provided (vegan, gluten-free options will be available). There will be access to a prayer room and a room for nursing mothers and children.

Conference

Sunday 26th April (9:00am) in the Brunei Gallery

Registration (Sunday)

This year marks an important set of anniversaries in global feminist history: the 100th anniversary of the United States 19th amendment giving women the right to vote; the 75th anniversary of the United Nations; 25th anniversary of the Beijing women’s conference; and the 20th anniversary of the passage of the United Nations Resolution 1325, on women, peace, and security. In the spirit of decolonising these past events, Keyet Makonnen, a member of WILPF - Voices of African Women Campaign (VoAW) and the Women’s Officer for the United Nations Association LASER, is hosting a conference to reflect on African women’s participation in international politics, peacemaking, and movement building. This event will be a satellite event of the SOAS Festival of Ideas and is co-sponsored by the Centre for African Studies at SOAS and the United Nations Association London and South-East chapter (UNA LASER).

The programme seeks to look to the future, including discussions on contemporary politics, global problems, and a look towards a restorative economics.

Refreshments will be provided, and we kindly ask for a donation for the lunch provided (vegan, gluten-free options will be available). There will be access to a prayer room and a room for nursing mothers and children.
