About this event

Isabel Schnabel (Central Bank - Executive Board), Sabine Mauderer (Bundesbank - Executive Board), Emmanuel Buttin (European Commission), Pierre Monnin (Council on Economic Policies), Thierry Philipponnat (Finance Watch), Chair: Ronan Palmer ( E3G)

This webinar will discuss the role of monetary policy and finance sector policies in the implementation of sustainable responses to the COVID-19 crisis. These sustainable measures are not only crucial to reduce the longer-term financial system exposure to climate risk, but can also be a cornerstone to support economic transformation for long term growth and job creation. Some of these options were recently presented in the Inspire policy brief “ A Toolbox for Sustainable Crisis Response Measures for Central Banks and Supervisors ” produced by LSE Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance.

The ECB has responded forcefully to the COVID-19 crisis. As the crisis response shifts from the stabilisation phase to the recovery phase, we will discuss how monetary and financial policy can contribute to reduce future risks to financial stability while ensuring an effective crisis response in the eurozone. The webinar will also cover the role that national central banks can play in reducing the climate risk exposure of national finance institutions and businesses as a result of crisis response related decisions. The mobilisation of finance for green investments will become increasingly important for the implementation of recovery packages. We will therefore also discuss the role of EU’s finance standards and renewed sustainable finance strategy for a green recovery.
