Professor Richard King, University of Kent

What does it mean to globalise philosophy? This talk will explore some of the theoretical and institutional issues involved in developing an undergraduate degree which explores philosophy as a global enterprise and phenomenon. Professor King will outline the thoughts behind his design of a degree in Global Philosophies at the university of Kent leading to a group discussion of the World Philosophies project at SOAS.

Speaker Bio: Richard King is Professor of Buddhist and Asian Studies at the University of Kent. He specialises in South Asian traditions and critical theory and Religious Studies He is author amongst others of Orientalism and Religion: Postcolonial Theory, India and 'the Mystic East' (Routledge, 1999) and Indian Philosophy: an Introduction to Hindu and Buddhist Thought. (Edinburgh University Press, 1999).
