About this event

Speaker: Haris Dervišević

Ottoman calligraphy is mostly observed from the perspective of Istanbul and the calligraphers of Istanbul. Calligraphic art produced on the margins of the empire is often neglected. The focus of this research seminar is the 18th-century calligraphy scene in Sarajevo, for which we have numerous historical sources and surviving examples of calligraphy. In this century a large number of calligraphers had students, and together they had an impact on the art market as well as influencing the establishment of the first gallery of Islamic calligraphy in Sarajevo.

The Research Seminar in Islamic Art (ReSIA) is convened by Professor Anna Contadini.
