Abstract

Compared to twenty years ago, today we are witnessing a golden age of international Taiwan Studies. During this time there has been a remarkable rise in the numbers of universities with Taiwan Studies programmes, an institutionalisation of Taiwan Studies association and an expansion in the numbers of academic publications on Taiwan. Despite the impressive progress, there are concerns over the sustainability of international Taiwan Studies. Many programmes or courses have either closed down or failed to institutionalise and a common challenge has been a reliance on short-term funding.
To discuss the sustainability of the field we have invited a group of speakers who have rich experience in Taiwan Studies in both Europe and North America. We will consider a number of themes, such as our own assessments on the state of international Taiwan Studies, how we have tried to make our programmes sustainable, as well as potential solutions to the underlying challenges that we face.
