Professor Mahmood Daoud Samra is both an Honorary Fellow of SOAS and also an alumnus - he was a PhD student at the School graduating in 1958. He studied at SOAS following receipt of a Licence of Literature from Fouad I University (now Cairo University) in 1950.
Immediately following his time at SOAS, Professor Samra was Vice President of Al Arabi Magazine in Kuwait. He then joined the University of Jordan, which was to mark the start of a long and distinguished academic career. He joined the University in 1964 in an Associate Professorial role, following which he held a range of posts rising to the position of Vice President in 1973 and President in 1989.
In 1991 he became Minister of Culture, and served two successive Jordanian governments under Sherif Zaid Bin Shaker and Abdel Salam Majali. In 1993 he joined the University of Petra in Jordan, as the organisation's President.
