Professor Göran Malmqvist was awarded a fellowship from SOAS following a lifetime dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge.
Professor Malmqvist studied Classics, Ethnography and Chinese at the universities of Uppsala and Stockholm, followed by a masters in Chinese at Stockholm University. With help from a Rockefeller Fellowship, he completed two years of fieldwork in China in the late 1940s before completing his PhD in Chinese at Stockholm University in 1951. He became a lecturer in Chinese at Uppsala University and then moved to SOAS in 1953, after which he spent three years as the Cultural Secretary at the Swedish Embassy in Peking. He moved to the Canberra University College in 1959, before becoming chair in Chinese and Dean of Faculty of Asian Studies at the Australian National University in 1961. In 1965 Prof Malmqvist returned to Sweden as Chair in Chinese at Stockholm University.
Throughout his career he has published in the fields of Chinese phonetics and phonology, the syntax of modern and classical Chinese, and translations of some 40 Chinese literary works into Swedish.
Professor Malmqvist was elected to the Swedish Academy in 1985. He is also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities. He has received honorary doctorates from the Chinese University of Kong Kong and Karl Universität in Prague.
