Contingent Citizens examines the ambiguous position of South Africa’s public sector workers, and the implications for contemporary understandings of citizenship. Focusing a lens on the professional ethic of nurses in a rural hospital, it shows how experiences are shaped by a deep history of mission medicine as well as new forms of public management and patients’ new rights in the democratic era. It highlights the limitations of the postapartheid workplace to fulfill aspirations and contain discontent.
This launch is part of the Southern Africa Seminar Series.
