This award-winning film is a romantic and poetic portrayal of life on Ireland's isolated west coast Aran Islands.  This now classic film was heralded for its visual beauty of scenic shots of seaside cliffs and rocky expanses as well for its poetic style in telling a story of human triumph over the forces of nature that make difficult living conditions for the local subsistence farmers and fisher-folk.  However, despite its success the film has had its own share of controversy for the way it combined fiction and documentary technique.
