This classic film focuses on an ‘Eskimo’ hunter and his family as they struggle for survival against the harsh forces of nature in the Canadian artic. The film follows the beauty and danger of such day-to-day activities of hunting, travelling and domestic life. Yet despite the difficult living conditions the film also portrays the intimacy, affection and fun of Nanook’s family. This was Flaherty’s first film and has been widely acclaimed as the first documentary feature film.
