Abstract: The British Museum’s Albukhary Gallery of the Islamic World, which opened in October 2018, represents a new direction in the display of Islamic material culture, both in the UK and further afield. Having spent two years involved in many aspects of its planning and execution, I will discuss the historical background of the gallery within the British Museum and the curatorial approaches to the collection. I will also seek to place the gallery within the context of displays of Islamic art elsewhere around the world.
