Aspiring Anthropologists attend Anthropology in London Day

SOAS University of London supports Anthropology in London Day, which was held on 14 June 2016. This year’s event focused on anthropological engagements in politics. Two different concerns were highlighted. The first was the myriad different ways in which political relations impact upon anthropological fieldwork, covering topics such as funding regimes to the designation of taboo topics. The second was the novel ways in which anthropologists have understood politics, and shaped political processes. The day embraced discussions on such diverse subjects as leopard-hunting in India; midwifery in Europe; family planning in Nepal; food consumption in Italy; plastic surgery in Brazil; and climate change in northern England.

This annual event is an excellent opportunity for PhD students to present their fieldwork and it highlights the many important ways that SOAS students and scholars of Anthropology make an impact on the modern world today.

The Department of Anthropology and Sociology at SOAS is among the most respected in the field of Social and Cultural Anthropology, and offers unique postgraduate programmes relating to the Anthropology of Travel and Tourism and the Anthropology of Media.

Additional Anthropology events are planned for later in the month, including London Anthropology Day, which is a university taster day for students, careers advisors and teachers. There are a host of useful online resources worth checking out for any aspiring anthropologists thinking about starting out on a career in Anthropology.
