SOAS is one of the world’s most international universities. Our specialist focus draws in the brightest minds from around the world, and within a student body of 5,500 we have over 130 nationalities represented. More than half of our students come from outside the UK and almost 20% are European. At SOAS you will not only learn from our academics – you will also learn from the students around you.
We are proud of our international approach. It is vital for the United Kingdom that our sector remains welcoming to EU students, while also continuing to collaborate with partner research networks across Europe.
The UK has given formal notification of its intention to withdraw from the European Union (by triggering Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union), but still remains a member of the European Union. Therefore, there is no immediate change to the position of EEA nationals in the UK. Students and their family members can continue to exercise their residency rights in the UK.
The process of leaving the EU is likely to take a minimum of two years from the date the UK gave notification of its intention to leave the EU (29 March 2017). The position of EEA nationals in the UK remains unchanged throughout this time. The general position for EU nationals in the UK after the UK’s withdrawal from the EU is still being negotiated as part of the final Brexit agreement.
How will this affect fee rates?
The UK government has confirmed that EU students entering in the 2018/19 academic year are guaranteed the same fee rate as UK students, as well as access to student finance, for the duration of the course. This guarantee applies even if the UK were to leave the European Union prior to completion of the degree.
At the time of writing, this guarantee has not yet been extended to those starting in 2019/20. Prospective EU students who are interested in joining in 2019 are advised to regularly check the web resources listed below:
