Student Profile: Shyan Al-Barzangi, BSc International Management

The International Management course I am taking at SOAS focuses on the Middle East and North Africa, but it includes a wide range of options, which is useful while I try to figure out which direction I want to take when I leave university.

I was first introduced to the idea of a career in business by a Young Enterprise scheme, which aims to make business relevant to the daily lives of young people. I was interested to extend what I learned on the scheme to a more global context, and that was when I first heard about SOAS.

I have particularly enjoyed the modules relating to marketing and international development, although less so the ones dealing with mathematics!

During my first year at SOAS I set up the Iraq Society in the Students’ Union. The aim of the Society is to present a more positive view of Iraqi society, and to help create a union between all the groups that live within the Iraqi region. It was quite a struggle to get the Society off the ground to start with, but now it has a good number of members and I enjoy my role as its President.
