“SOAS and me are like an oxymoron. I am subject of colonialism whilst SOAS is where colonialism was perfected; made bespoke through linguistic and cultural understanding of the Oriental world. Paradoxically, it’s also the place I feel most at home; here, where a criminally ridiculous level of diversity and a non-Eurocentric campus is coupled with joints and sleeves being rolled up for study and debate that pierces the normative ‘understanding’. I guess SOAS is different because everyone is encouraged to be different.”
