First Bangladeshi UK High Court judge appointee is SOAS graduate
Diversity at the top?

It takes only a perfunctory glance through the names that populate the list of High Court judges of England and Wales on its Wikipedia page to realise that diversity at the top has perhaps not been a central tenet of the institution’s Human Resources agenda.

It is therefore a point of particular pride for SOAS that a recent Judge appointment is both a graduate and the first person of Bangladeshi origin to reach the highest legal office in the land.

SOAS graduate Akhlaq Choudhury QC

SOAS graduate Akhlaq Choudhury QC

Akhlaq Choudhury QC was born in Winchester to parents who had settled here from Bangladesh. The first in his family to attend university, he graduated SOAS with a first in Law.

His family are deeply proud of his achievement, as well:

“My brother’s entry to the legal world started in SOAS, and I believe his achievements are also a reflection of the solid education and inspiration he received at SOAS” Zak Choudhury.

We can only hope that Akhlaq’s trailblazing path will mark the first of many more diverse appointments to the UK’s High Court of Justice.

As the nation’s most irreproachable arbiter of justice, isn’t it axiomatic at this point that the institution should reflect the society it represents?
