Challenge Status Quo: Locals of Nagorno Karabakh ritually light candles in Gtichavank Monastery (summer 2012, Nagorno Karabakh, Caucasus) Churches of Nagorno Karabakh were targets of destruction and vandalization during the armed conflicts between Azerbaijan and Armenia in 1994, exemplified by the Gtichavank Complex, one of the lesser known treasures of the south of Nagorno Karabakh, near the off-limit area – the still active frontline with Azerbaijan. Yet locals pay visits to the church situated in a very remote and hardly accessible area and perform religious rituals, thus Challenging Status Quo and international silence regarding the conflict in question.
