Buddhism InsideOut seeks to advance knowledge of the ideals, doctrines and practices of Buddhism beyond the academy. The events organised through Buddhism InsideOut complement the more technical lectures delivered elsewhere at SOAS. Buddhism InsideOut engages a different audience. In Europe and the US, Buddhism has become part of the fabric of society; it enters public discourse at many levels through mindfulness therapy, vegetarianism and non-violence advocacy, etc, and yet it is often difficult to obtain robust information about its traditions outside the scholarly discourse and dedicated Dharma centres. Buddhism InsideOut aims to redress this situation through a series of public outreach events, drawing on lectures, workshops, film screenings, exhibitions and book launches for the non-specialist public interested in Buddhism.
Buddhism InsideOut brings together the many different voices that speak about and for Buddhism, both from within and from without its traditions. It seeks to inspire new levels of engagement between the worlds of the practitioner and the scholar; it forges links, promotes research, reduces misunderstanding and helps to build trust between these two foremost Buddhist constituencies.
