About this Event

The theme of the 2021 conference is ‘A New Dawn: Rebirth, Renewal, Regeneration’ .

The Igbo Conference, in partnership with SOAS, University of London is an annual international conference that aims to encourage and promote Igbo Studies in the UK and beyond. It seeks to provide a forum for intellectual and cultural exchange between scholars, practitioners, students and members of the community, serving as a unique bridge between the community and academia.

Over the last nine years, the conference has created discussions amongst contributors from all over the world. A selection of our previous talks can be viewed HERE

Although our conference is usually held at SOAS, University of London, this year’s event will be virtual, due to the continuing COVID-19 situation.

As we consider the global challenges presented by Covid-19, and as we edge towards the end of this period of immense disruption and transformation, we wanted to utilise this moment to consider the possibilities for renewal, regeneration and rebirth. We have invited our speakers to draw on a range of historical periods or forms of cultural expression from within the Igbo context to provide insight into how Igbo people have fared with and re-emerged from episodes of change.

These talks will be approached through an exploration of momentous historical events, such as the Atlantic slave trade, colonisation or civil war, or through an engagement with Igbo beliefs and practices, such as the concept of reincarnation in Igbo culture, the creation and significance of Mbari houses or cultural exchange and renewal amongst the Igbo and their neighbours.

Our 2021 Speakers will offer their own interpretation of the 2021 theme and we welcome their broad interpretations of it.

It will be a 3 day event that promises to enrich your mind as always, and in our usual style, start conversations that make you think and encourage change.

As a celebration for our 10th year of having conversations about Igbo Studies and Igbo heritage, we will also end the event with an online after party, whisch will be hosted by our Igbo conference former speaker and award winning international DJ, DJ Blox (Kanene Dieobi).

The 2021 Igbo Conference will be a free event, but requires registration.
