Please join us for a book presentation and discussion of "The Asaba Massacre: Trauma, Memory and the Nigerian Civil War" by S. Elizabeth Bird and Fraser Ottanelli (Cambridge University Press, 2017). Bird and Ottanelli (University of South Florida) offer a new interpretation of the slaughter of thousands of civilians by Nigerian Federal troops in October 1967, redefining the event as a pivotal point in the Nigerian Civil War. Their work is based on interviews with survivors, and with military and political leaders, as well as previously unstudied archival sources. They also explore the long afterlife of trauma, the reconstruction of memory and how it intersects with justice, and the task of reconciliation in a nation where a legacy of ethnic suspicion continues to reverberate.
