In collaboration with the SOAS Centre of African Studies, the Annual Symposium of the Society for the Study of the Sudans-UK will take place on Saturday 16 September at SOAS in the Khalili Lecture Theatre. Registration (and tea or coffee!) are at 9.15AM till 10 AM and we're aiming at ending the day at about 4.30pm. See SSSUK.Org for more information and for the full programme, which will be posted soon.

This year, the theme of “Sudans in the region” runs through the conference. Sudanese Professor Abdel Salam Noureldin, formerly of Exeter University, will speak on “Why the Red Sea should be at the centre of Sudan studies”. A British former Ambassador to Sudan, Ian Cliff, will talk on “Sudan Politics: Single Track or Multiple Track? Internal or Regional?” South Sudanese researcher Sieta Adhieu Majok will focus on “The region and South Sudan”, including discussion of the country's recent peace agreements, and we hope that other South Sudan specialists will join her on a panel.

Postgraduates Radina Elsahib and Laura Attwell will talk about their impressions of Sudan from the perspective of young people coming from the UK. Sudanese educationalist Ali Abdelatif will discuss the encounter between national and cultural identity. Former BBC journalist Fergus Nicoll will tell us about the Irish journalist Frank Power and the Siege of Khartoum. Language teacher Imogen Thurbon will talk about and mount an exhibition on a literacy project in Sudan.

Please download the full programme on the right-hand side of this page or by clicking HERE.

We shall also have bookstalls, including one of publications reflecting multicultural Britain. The Society will also hold its Annual General Meeting, which non-members may attend without voting – though if you join SSSUK, then you can vote!

We look forward to seeing you all for yet another enjoyable and informative day on the two Sudans.
