It is Britain's largest university department specialising in the languages and cultures of the Middle East, with a long and distinguished track record in teaching and research in the region's modern and ancient languages. More than twenty-five members of the department's staff are engaged full-time in research into Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Arabic and Islamic Studies, Caucasian languages, Central Asian Studies, Hebrew and Israeli Studies, Persian and Iranian, and Turkish.
