China is always in the news but usually without much historical context. This talk will examine China's changing borders in the past, focusing on the Song dynasty, with the goal of shedding light on the present.
Valerie Hansen teaches Chinese and world history at Yale. Her current research examines the interconnected world of the year 1000, exploring the goods, people, and ideas that traveled from one region to another in a time with no mechanized transport.
In the past decade, she has spent more than two years in China: 2008-09 and 2011-12, teaching at Yale's joint undergraduate program with Peking University. She spent fall 2015 teaching at Yale-NUS in Singapore and fall 2016 as a visiting scholar at Xiamen University.
