With the passing of Harvard University Professor Emeritus Roderick MacFarquhar, international China Studies has lost a true giant in the field, and the SOAS community has lost an esteemed colleague and cherished friend of many decades.

Ruins of Yuanmingyuan Philanthropic donation to research the histories of objects from China’s Yuanmingyuan or ‘Summer Palace’

Louise Tythacott, Pratapaditya Pal Senior Lecturer in Curating and Museology of Asian Art, has been awarded a major philanthropic donation to undertake research on the histories and displays of objects from the Yuanmingyuan, or old ‘Summer Palace’, in Beijing.

The project will run until January 2019, and will result in a publication which traces the diaspora and displays of Yuanmingyuan artefacts in Britain and France.

SOAS celebrates partnership with Sir Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art to secure future loan of Percival David Library and archives

SOAS University of London this week celebrated the strengthening of its relationship with the Sir Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art through the signing of a new Loan Agreement.  The Agreement, signed by the School’s Director Baroness Valerie Amos CH and the Chair of the Percival David Foundation, Colin Sheaf, coincided with the inaugural Professorial Lecture by Professor Shane McCausland, who has held the Percival David Chair in Chinese Art since 2015.
