Professional Development in Higher Education Programme
The Programme is intended to provide academic teaching staff with the knowledge, skills and training to help them be more effective and creative in their pedagogical delivery and academic support of learners.
Reflective practise is at the programme's core and integrated within the programme is the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF). The programme is Higher Education Academy (HEA) accredited.
Programme Aims are as follows:
- To introduce participants to theory, methodology and resources that will help them to plan, present, manage and evaluate students' learning and their own teaching.
- To provide participants with the opportunity to practice teaching skills in a supportive learning environment.
- To introduce newly appointed lecturers and teaching fellows to SOAS procedures, policies and practices related to learning and teaching.
- To support new members of teaching staff to develop discipline specific learning and teaching support skills
At the heart of the Programme are the Core Units of the PDHEP [Units 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3] These are three day workshops that cover classroom management and dynamics; basic teaching techniques; learning styles; assessment of learning and teaching; providing effective feedback to students; and structuring teaching sessions. The individual PDHEP units are also open to anyone who wishes to attend the sessions for personal professional development but does not wish to complete the programme.
