Undergraduate and Taught Masters students:
We provide essay writing and study skills tutorials to undergraduate and postgraduate taught students.
Need some help writing your essay or dissertation? Want to get a second opinion on your writing style from a PhD student? Want some information and strategies on how to approach an exam?
Come along to a one-to-one tutorial to get free individual help and advice where you can have these questions and more answered.
Topics covered include:
- How to approach essay questions
- Planning, drafting and editing your essay or dissertation
- Organising your ideas and arguments
- Using the correct tone and academic language
- How to reference correctly and avoiding plagiarism
- Managing your reading
- Managing your time
Each tutorial lasts 30 minutes (45 minutes during the summer months for the Taught Masters dissertation) and are given by PhD students. These tutorials can be booked by coming to the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching office (located in room E12 in the Library) in person.
We are also happy to offer one-to-one tutorials via Skype to SOAS students who are writing their essays or dissertations from another country.
To get the most out of these tutorials, students can send some old or new written work, even if it is only in the planning or draft stages, to firstname.lastname@example.org a minimum of two working days before the tutorial.
We would encourage you to identify the key issues and problems or specific questions that you wish to discuss with your tutor when you email your work as this will give the tutor time to prepare and ensure a more focused and productive tutorial tailored to your needs.
This is not a proofreading service. However, we are able to help you improve your proofreading skills. Tutors are unable to correct English language, grammar or spelling, nor can they assist you with essay content. For that reason, your tutor may be from any field of study and are not matched to your own subject area.
If you need to cancel a tutorial for any reason, this must be done no fewer than two working days in advance.
Due to high demand, each student is limited to three one-to-one sessions each term. The tutorials are strictly confidential and we only keep records for monitoring purposes.
