Professor Clifford Bob, author of The Marketing of Rebellion and The Global Right Wing and the Clash of World Politics.
Rights are usually viewed as defensive concepts representing mankind’s highest aspirations to protect and uplift the vulnerable. But since the Enlightenment, political combatants have also used rights belligerently--to batter despised communities, demolish existing institutions, and smash opposing ideas. Examining historical and contemporary conflicts, I describe how activists sharpen rights into weapons.
Chaired by Dr Stephen Hopgood.
This talk is co-hosted by the Centre for the International Politics of Conflict, Rights and Justice (Department of Politics) and the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (CISD). It is part of the CISD International Relations Speaker Series.
