“The State against Mandela and the others”
Directors: Nicolas Champeaux, Gilles Porte. Nelson Mandela seized centre stage during a historic trial in 1963 and 1964. But there were eight others who, like him, faced the death sentence. They too were subjected to pitiless cross-examinations. To a man they stood firm and turned the tables on the state: South Africa's apartheid regime was in the dock. In this new film, recently recovered sound archives of those hearings transport us back into the thick of the courtroom battles. 105 minutes.
Director: Louise Kanza. Ten years after a wave of Xenophobic attacks that claimed the lives of 64 foreign nationals in South Africa, children give their honest opinions on migrants. 1 minute.
“Singabantu (We are human)”
Director: Louise Kanza. Singabantu is a Afrophobia Awareness video shot in the remains of a house in Rosettenville, Johannesburg that was set alight and burnt to the ground by disgruntled residents during service delivery protests that turned into Afrophobic attacks. The video stars a diverse group of African immigrant youth that share the daily plight they face being “foreigners” in South Africa. 2 minutes.
The films will be followed by a discussion.
