SOAS University of London

Azra Dizdar, 1st Year

When I was applying for a Chevening Scholarship, I could have applied to any university in the UK and my full costs would be covered. I was awarded the scholarship and I decided to undertake my Chevening journey at SOAS for many reasons: its learning environment, diversity, quality of education, and reputation as a world leading institute for global studies.

As a professional violinist with 19 years of experience in the field of classical music, I wanted to make a career change. I chose CISD because I knew that once I graduate, I will be fully prepared for a career I see myself in the future- diplomacy. CISD is one of the rare departments across the UK that delivers carefully calibrated diplomatic training embodied in Diplomatic Practice Module that is completely adapted to the challenges of modern diplomacy.

However, I see now that skills acquired through diplomatic training will serve me well even if I opt for a slightly different career path. Once you come to CISD, you will be able to study security, energy policy, global advocacy and more. Upon completion of the course, you are likely to find yourself in an excellent position - to be qualified for a myriad of different career paths. I came as a violinist but I am now considering a career in peacebuilding, mediation and conflict prevention.
