Module overview
The module is the capstone of the BA Liberal Arts, building on the foundation established in the first two years, particularly the research proposal produced in the spring of the second year, and allowing the student to pursue a piece of independent research.
Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
LO1) to design and carry out a substantial piece of independent research
LO2) to identify and analyse appropriate sources and data for the topic in question
LO3) engage critically with the relevant academic literature
LO4) to deploy appropriate theories and methods
LO5) to present the research outcome in an appealing and coherent way.
Scope and syllabus
The convenor will meet with the group as a whole at several points during the year, to ensure timely progress towards final submission, and will encourage the formation of small writing groups, to sustain the practices of peer review and mutual support developed during the first two years of the programme.
Method of assessment
- 800 word dissertation proposal (worth 10%)
- 10,000 word dissertation or 3,000 word submission and 20-30 minute alternative e.g. audio-visual presentation or equivalent (90%)
