Module overview
Discusses the genres of Hausa literature, their distinctive features, the social context of their performance and creation: it takes in turn tales, modern fiction, plays, proverbs and sayings, song and poetry. In discussing songs and poetry it considers metre, style, imagery and the Islamic traditions that lie behind Hausa Islamic verse.
In addition to reading texts in English translation a selected number of prose and verse texts in Hausa will be studied in detailed. The text book is Poetry, Prose and Popular Culture in Hausa (Furniss).
Prerequisites
Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
Hausa 2B equips students to:
- Read and analyse Hausa plays and poems at a basic/intermediate level of complexity.
- Analyze metre, style, imagery and Islamic traditions behind Hausa Islamic verse.
- Understand different genres of Hausa literature in social context.
Workload
Total of 22 weeks teaching with 2 hours classroom contact per week.
Method of assessment
One written examination (80%) taken in May/June and two essays (20%) to be submitted on day 1, week 1, term 2 and day 1, week 1, term 3.
