Prerequisite: Chinese 3 or equivalent standard
Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
This is an intermediate module designed to develop comprehensive reading skills and to expand vocabulary systematically beyond the 1,500+ characters level reached in Chinese 3. It aims to achieve a capability of independent study of documentary Chinese texts, while giving considerable attention to oral skills. Students will be able to engage in conversation on general topics as well as give sustained oral presentation on a familiar topic.
Workload
Total of 20 weeks teaching with 3 hours classroom contact per week consisting of a 2 hour lecture and 1 hour tutorial.
Scope and syllabus
A wide range of topics will be covered including the environment, politics, education and other social issues.
Method of assessment
A three-hour written examination taken in May/June (70%); continuous assessment (20%); oral examination (10%).
