Intermediate Classical Tibetan

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

At the end of the module students will be familiar with the characteristics of Tibetan pre-classical style (7th-10th centuries AD currently) in terms of palaeography, orthography, vocabulary and grammar. They will also be acquainted with the main genres of the style, namely inscriptions, letters, historical and mythological works, and Buddhist and non-Buddhist religious texts, while considering the history of the study of the style and its special problems.


Total of 22 weeks teaching with 3 hours classroom contact per week.

Method of assessment

One three-hour written examination (80%) taken in May/June and coursework (20%).
