Module overview

A 5,000 word essay, requiring an orderly synthesis of material on any approved topic in African studies. The essay is written under the supervision of a teacher who must approve the topic before research is begun and who will supervise its progress.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

Students will develop the skill to work independently on an approved topic of their choice in African Studies. To do this they will identify an area of interest to them and define a research question, refine and pursue that question via library research (possibly augmented by personal experience), and write an argued extended essay with footnotes and references in standard professional format.

Workload

Maximum of 5 hours supervision will be given throughout the term/year.

Method of assessment

  • One 5,000 word essay (100%) due early term 3
  • The exact assessment deadline dates are published on the relevant module Moodle/BLE page
