Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
The objective of the module is to provide the students with advanced training in academic research and writing. This final year unit is the culmination of the research and writing training provided throughout the BA in South East Asia Studies (Year Abroad).
At the end of a module, a student should be able to demonstrate clear evidence of undertaking a detailed supervised study of a topic in South East Asian Studies. Candidates research their projects with guidance from an appropriate supervisor. This module will be examined by a project of 10,000 words.
Teaching will be conducted through regular contact (online/telephone communication) with an appropriate member of staff.
Scope and syllabus
An independent study project of 10,000 words on an approved topic in the language/literature/culture/society of the country in which a student has spent his/her Year Abroad. It provides the opportunity to seek out information from various sources, but in particular, to use the language of study in a focused way. Essay-writing skills learned in the first and second year of study will be put into practice.
Students taking this module must be in contact with the module convenor Dr Mulaika Hijjas as early as possible, ideally BEFORE they depart for the year abroad, for help formulating a suitable topic, identifying a supervisor and other support.
Method of assessment
One essay of 10,000 words to be submitted by Friday week 1, term 3 (100%).
