Directed Readings in a South Asian Topic

To enable students, under expert guidance and supervision, to read and analyse representative samples of textual material in Bengali, Hindi, Nepali, Sanskrit or Urdu not taught elsewhere within the syllabus. The module will allow students to use South Asian language materials for topics and areas in line with their own academic interests. Topics and materials will be selected in consultation with the supervisor

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

  1. Read primary material in a South Asian language related to their own interest
  2. Locate the texts within the appropriate generic, intellectual, and historical frameworks
  3. Develop and test new critical approaches to the analysis of South Asian texts


A total of 20 weeks teaching with 2 hours contact per week.

Scope and syllabus

The syllabus is decided at the beginning of each course

Method of assessment

  • One essay or annotated translation (3000 words) to be submitted in Term 2, week 1, day 5 (40%)
  • One essay (4000 words) to be submitted in Term 3, week 1, day 5 (60%)
