Readings in Mixed Script Korean

In this module students will read and translate texts written in mixed script Korean, that is Korean texts using a mix of han'gul and Chinese characters.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

1. Read and translate a wide range of texts written in mixed script Korean
2. Use hanja dictionary to read, analyse and translate advanced unseen texts using Chinese characters.

Workload

Total of 10 weeks teaching with 2 hours classroom contact per week consisting of a 2 hour lecture.

Scope and syllabus

Students will read texts prepared by the convenor for each week representing the different types of texts that use mixed script Korean: newspaper articles, academic texts, older literary works etc.

Method of assessment

One two-hour written examination in May/June (60%); a translation with commentary of 1,500 words to be submitted on day 1, in the term following teaching (40%).
