Module overview
In this module students will read and translate texts written in mixed script Korean, that is Korean texts using a mix of han'gul and Chinese characters.
Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
- Read and translate a wide range of texts written in mixed script Korean
- Use hanja dictionary to read, analyse and translate advanced unseen texts using Chinese characters.
Workload
Total of 10 weeks teaching with 2 hours classroom contact per week consisting of a 2 hour lecture.
Scope and syllabus
Students will read texts prepared by the convenor for each week representing the different types of texts that use mixed script Korean: newspaper articles, academic texts, older literary works etc.
Method of assessment
One two-hour written examination in May/June (60%); a translation with commentary of 1,500 words to be submitted on day 1, in the term following teaching (40%).
