Ch 400: Advanced Chinese

The module is designed to develop and consolidate 1) the reading and writing skills and 2) the listening and speaking skills.

The module aims to prepare the student to handle authentic texts in various forms and from various sources (reading); to write effectively and appropriately in Chinese (writing) ; to demonstrate an effective understanding of the structures, registers, etc. of the target language. 

Students' receptive and productive skills will be developed through using sound channels. By setting up situations and providing opportunities to use the target language to communicate in class, students will develop their communicative competence through completing practical tasks, such as describing, narrating, discussing, giving presentations and debating (speaking), together with summarizing and discussing the contents in the target language after watching or listening to artificial and authentic programmes (listening).

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

  1. Read Chinese texts, newspapers and academic publications with full confidence
  2. Master advanced grammar structures/usage; improve accuracy in writing and speaking
  3. Develop a full range of vocabulary for daily and professional usage
  4. Gain confidence in writing lengthy formal essays in Chinese 
  5. Enhance in-depth understanding of important social issues in contemporary China


Total of 20 weeks teaching with 3 hours classroom contact per week consisting of a 2 hour lecture and 1 hour tutorial.

Method of assessment

Homework assignments (30%); 2 oral presentation of 8 - 10 minutes duration - one in term 1 and one in term 2 (20%); final reading and writing examination of 2 hours duration (50%).
