This module is based on a tailor-made set of reading materials approved by the supervising tutor, taking into account the students' personal interests and the specific linguistic skills they wish to develop. It is designed for those final year BA Korean programme students who have completed all available 400-level Korean language modules in their pre-final years. It will provide students with an opportunity to improve their overall reading, writing, and speaking skills through extensive reading on topics of interest.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

  1. Read and translate a wide range of texts written in advanced level Korean
  2. To use advanced language skills in order to analyse Korean texts
  3. To produce advanced level written work in both Korean and English


5 hours project supervision over one term.

Scope and syllabus

Reading and translation of selected Korean literary works, newspaper articles, essays in business, finance, law, politics, history and other topics of interest.

Method of assessment

Korean to English Translation OR English commentary OR Korean commentary of 1,000 words to be submitted on day1, week 7 in the term of teaching (40%); an essay (in English) of 2,500 words to be submitted on day 1, week 1, in the term following teaching (60%).
