This module is designed for students who have completed Ch100: Elementary Chinese (or equivalent) in the 1st year. The intermediate module introduces further grammatical aspects of the modern Chinese language and aims at improving the students' all-round language skills in reading, listening, speaking, and writing by mastering topics at a suitable linguistic level. Students begin studying topics relevant to modern China, using authentic Chinese texts in an effort to better prepare to deal with original Chinese source materials. By the end of the module, students will be able to deal with guided reading of literary and non-literary texts and complete and demonstrate their own Chinese project using books and online sources.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
- gain knowledge and understanding of intermediate Chinese grammar
- master a wide range of vocabulary
- be confident in understanding and producing passages written in Chinese of medium length on daily topics and some specialized topics
- be confident in understanding spoken Chinese and engaging in medium-length spoken discourse on familiar topics.
Total of 22 weeks teaching with 5 hours class contact per week made up of a 2 hour lecture, 1 hour tutorial, 1 hour language class and 1 hour langugage laboratory work.
Scope and syllabus
The module provides training of a combination of all language skills which include grammar, reading and writing, listening and speaking, and translation. Students will develop further understanding of Chinese grammar and explore current topics in contemporary China. The module is offered in simplified characters.
Method of assessment
One two hour written paper taken in May/June (40%); two oral assessments of 12-15 mins each (20%); listening assessments (20%); weekly homework (20%).
