This is a first year module covering microeconomic principles. It deals with the question of how societies organise resource allocation and production through prices, and with the economic behaviour of individuals and individual institutions mediated by markets.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

Upon successful completion of this module a student will obtain:

  • Good understanding of the building blocks of modern microeconomic theory
  • Awareness of different theoretical approaches to analysing economic problems
  • Ability to develop coherent and logical economic arguments
  • Ability to present coherent economic arguments orally and in writing
  • Ability to analyse and evaluate theoretical claims and their policy implications

Method of assessment

  • 60% exam
  • 20% mid-term assignment
  • 20% end of term assignment
