Module overview

This module provides teaching and learning of intermediate level Swahili language. It covers a wide variety of texts covering Swahili culture, society, literature, politics, religion, science, etc. Teaching and learning will involve reading, analysing, writing, listening and speaking, with focus on grammar, vocabulary of different registers and styles at the higher intermediate level, using authentic oral and written Swahili material. The course is taught abroad (Kenyatta University, Kenya)  by experienced teachers and guest lecturers, with oversight  by SOAS Convenor.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

 

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to demonstrate:

  1. Knowledge and understanding of intermediate Swahili grammar
  2. Knowledge and understanding of a range of Swahili vocabulary
  3. Knowledge and understanding of a range of Swahili texts
  4. Ability to produce written Swahili at an intermediate level
  5. Ability to understand and operate at a range of Swahili registers
  6. Ability to communicate in Swahili at an intermediate level
  7. Understanding of the role of language in general, and Swahili in particular, in language-based scholarship and research
  8. Knowledge of the culture and society through a sociolinguistic approach to the study of Swahili

 

Workload

 

This is a summer abroad course and will be run by Kenyatta University in Kenya and Zanzibar State University in Tanzania with oversight by SOAS Convenor.  You will receive 20 hours per week to a total of 120 hours during your time abroad.

 

Scope and syllabus

 

Graded internally-produced course materials will be provided to Kenyatta University to serve as the guidelines for their syllabus design and delivery. SOAS will approve the syllabus and monitor student progress.

 

Method of assessment

 

  • one three-hour written examination taken (40%)
  • a 2,500 word essay on an aspect of Swahili language, culture or society to be submitted term 3 (30%)
  • one oral examination of 40 minutes duration (20%)
  • a 2 hour mid term test (10%)
