The module is designed for students who already have a basic grasp of classical literary Tibetan, and introduces Pre-Classical Tibetan.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of this module a student will:

  1. be familiar with the paleography and orthography of pre-classical Tibetan
  2. be familiar with the vocabulary and grammar of pre-classical Tibetan
  3. be familiar with the main genres of pre-calssical Tibetan wiritings

Workload

Total of 20 weeks teaching with 3 hours classroom contact per week consisting of language classes.

Scope and syllabus

The module introduces the characteristics of Tibetan pre-classical style (7th-10th centuries AD) in terms of palaeography, orthography, vocabulary and grammar. They will also be acquainted with the main genres of the style, namely inscriptions, letters, historical and mythological works, and Buddhist and non-Buddhist religious texts, while considering the history of the study of the style and its special problems.

Method of assessment

One three-hour written examination taken in May/June (80%); regular submission of homework exercises (20%).
