Module overview

This module is a core component of the two-year programmes with Intensive Language (Chinese). Classes are taught in Chinese by academic staff at a university in China over a period of six weeks during the summer (July/August). Assessment is conducted at SOAS upon return. The intensive classroom environment and immersion experience of living and studying in China is designed to facilitate the student’s ability to build fluency within the appropriate daily social and cultural contexts.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of intermediate/advanced Chinese grammar
  2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a wide range of Chinese vocabulary
  3. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the appropriateness of a wide range of Chinese  structures and expressions in a given context
  4. demonstrate the ability to understand passages written in Chinese of medium length on every day and some specialised topics
  5. the ability to understand spoken Chinese and to engage in spoken discourse of medium complexity on every day and some specialised topics

Workload

This module will be taught over the summer period with 100 hours contact at a partner university in China.

Scope and syllabus

Students will follow the language-acquisition syllabus of the Summer Chinese Language Programme offered by partner institution in China at the appropriate proficiency level. The teaching will cover all five skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking, and cultural understanding. Chinese is the language of instruction.

Method of assessment

Essay of 1500-2000 Chinese characters (80%); 10 minutes oral presentation related to the essay,  followed by 10 minutes Q&A (20%) held at SOAS after the period of study abroad.
