Module overview

These independent research essay modules run alongside the existing 15 unit courses that come under List A of the MA History programme. Students must identify the taught List A course with which their independent research essay corresponds. The independent research essay modules provide students with the opportunity for deeper learning about the subjects they are studying and to develop the research skills needed for independent research. The planning and writing of the long essay for this course helps prepare students for the dissertation component of the MA programme.

Objectives and learning outcomes of the module

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

LO1.               Develop research skills relating to a designated List A taught course;

LO2.               Understand and refine the work required to develop a research question independently of a course tutor;

LO3.               Refine writing and organisational skills through the writing of the long essay;

LO4.               Cultivate the skills required to successfully complete the MA dissertation.

Workload

5 hours' total supervision, broken down into 30 minute slots each week.

Scope and syllabus

N/A – the syllabus is provided by the existing 15 unit taught courses under List A, alongside student’s independent research.

Method of assessment

AS 1- Research Essay Plan - 1,000 words (10% of total mark for the module). Due the Monday after reading week, either Term 1 or Term 2.

As 2- Independent Research Essay - 5,000 words (90% of total mark for the module). Due at the end of the first week of Term 3.
